Off-field

Balloons '96, page 6 of 6: index, previous page.

Later in the week (Wednesday?) Jeff and I headed down to ABQ to help Bill's crew and maybe catch a ride. The day's task was to drop markers on field targets. The first wave of baloons started on the field, the second wave started a mile (at least) off-field. Bill's baloon was assigned to the second wave.

I have no idea what this picture is, but it happens to look exactly like sunrise to this owl ... lots of bright and glare. Jeff seems pretty awake. Dawn is, of course, radiant.
Bill's as cheery as usual. So we find a field upwind, unload the trailer and set up.
Check the burners. Then wait until the first wave clears the field.
The first clue that the wind was coming up was that the early-birds started tipping. Pretty soon a lot of balloons were dragging.
Touch and go on launch. Special shapes are specially hard to launch in wind.
Scorched a hole in the collar ... ... but getting aloft after all.
Jeff's ready to fly ... ... but having fun just being there.
Watching others scorch and drag, Bill calls off the launch. We watch those who got aloft.
Natually the wind dies down after we've packed up. Some big special shapes made it up, Yah-hoo!
