Introduction to Daylight

A three day course

July 28-30, 1998
St. John's College
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Daylight is pleased to offer to our licensees a 3-day introductory course on Daylight software and theory.

SYNOPSIS: The three main units of the course will be (1) Languages and Applications, (2) Database Administration, and (3) Toolkit Programming. These units will correspond to the three days of the course. Students not wishing to attend all three sessions may pursue a self-study option by special arrangement.

AUDIENCE: The course will be designed for Daylight novices, although basic knowledge of unix, and for toolkit programming, a programming language, is expected.

FORMAT: Classes will be divided into lecture and lab time. Approximately one workstation will be provided for every two students. Students will be assigned hands-on practice to reinforce each lesson. There will also be plenty of opportunity for experimentation and study based on students' specific needs and interests.

COURSE OUTLINE: A general outline of the course follows:

  2. Daylight Administration
  3. Daylight Toolkits

LEARNING OUTCOMES: After completing this course, students should have a basic understanding of the algorithms used in the Daylight Chemical Information System, and a practical knowledge of the applications available to accomplish a wide range of tasks. The Administration Unit should provide a working knowledge of designing, creating and managing molecule and reaction databases, including ways to make these tasks more convenient and robust. The Toolkit Unit should give students an understanding of the object-oriented approach to Daylight Toolkit programming, some familiarity with the library of toolkit functions and how they are organized and the library of existing contributed source code, and experience in developing and debugging an original program.

INSTRUCTORS: The lead instructors will be Jeremy Yang and Norah MacCuish. Other Daylight research staff will be recruited for special topics.

FACILITIES: A separate classroom and temporary computer lab at St. John's College will be provided. St. John's is located on 250 acres in the foothills overlooking Santa Fe, adjacent to the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the Pecos Wilderness. St. John's is 2 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza.

LODGING: Dormitory rooms are available at St. John's. Single rooms are $67/day including breakfast and lunch. Double rooms (private bedrooms w/ shared area) are $55/day per person including breakfast and lunch. These are comfortable rooms in a setting far superior to most hotels!

FEES: Tuition for all three days is $900 US. Room and board are separate and also payable to Daylight (per-day amount times 4 days).

ENROLLMENT LIMIT: Currently the enrollment limit is 20. To reserve a spot you must send Daylight your registration form with the tuition fee.
