Registering the 'right' tautomer is much less important if all you want to do is retrieve structures from database!
Registered structures may be used as input for other programs:
Molecular similarity
Lipophilicity
Hydrogen bonding properties
Methodology for converting tautomers may be applicable to analogous problems (e.g. converting acids and bases to major form at physiological pH)
